Cultural Shock and loves of Sri Lanka

Feb 21, 2018, Wednesday, Colombo, Sri Lanka

Yesterday is our first day looking around Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka. In the morning, we went to the Pettah Market. It was crowded. A lot bananas and many kinds of veggies, size are small. I guess they are natural, which means without hormones. They are very fresh too compared to the veggies in the supermarket we went to yesterday. Some friendly people even gave me free 2 carrots and a bunch of curry leaves. They are actually only earn $50-100 per month. I felt guilty now about getting their free vegetables. (I searched online today about their average salary).

Then we went to the Fort Railway station. It is pretty small. We bought 2 tickets to Kandy only costs 1000 rupees for first class. I asked about second class, it was 290×2=580rs, it is like half of the money and I wanted to buy second class. But David stopped me assertively and told the ticket officer, “first class!” Then he told me it’s only 2 dollars difference, why suffer fighting for the seats?! $1 = 150 rupees.

After buying the tickets, we were discussing about where to go next standing in front of the railway station. A tuktuk driver standing close and watching us and asked where we would  go. He charged 400rs for a ride to the National Museum., which is only 10 minutes. I tried to bargain down to 300rs, but David accepted it. Later we realized it probably only worth 100rs at most 200rs. This kind of driver who target only to foreigners are bad and charged too much. The 2 hours train only costs 500, but 10 minutes tuktuk charges as same as 2 hours train, how ridiculous it is. So we decided only use Uber then as “the tuktuk drivers rips you off”,  just like our host told us. After visiting the National Museum, we went back to Airbnb home.

In the evening, we walked to the beach nearby. At the beginning, we were really enjoyed it. I can see the small fruit and veggie shops, what the houses are like and their living condition, and walking along the river was cooler. However, after we walked to the main road, we could not cross the street as there was so much chaos on the street, especially so many tuktuk drivers do not care about pedestrians at all. They created a lot noise, heat, traffic, and bad air to the Main Street. I told David, “ if the government is smart, they should get rid of all the tuktuks as they create a lot of bad air, noise and the traffic. If they change all the tuktuks to electric, the air quality will be much better”…We met a few dogs on our way, I was scared and David protected me. One of the cultural shocks of Sri Lanka is dogs no leash but they are nice and never bother us.

The sunset was beautiful and the breeze was nice. We also saw an amazing scene of many people holding the door of train but we could not take the picture as the train went fast. The only regret is so much garbage was on the beach.

After seeing the sunset, we walked to a local restaurant. When passing a KFC, I decided to use the bathroom for free. Later, when I came out, David asked me how it was. I told him when I saw the toilet appear, my tears almost came out , then I found the water is warm. I felt super satisfied and told David it was a fantastic restroom. “Remember when you were in New Zealand, there was  toilet paper, warm water, but you complained about no paper seat cover? Why do you appreciate a bathroom like this so much!?” David teased me. “I lowered the bar!” After experiencing no toilet paper in a Malaysian bathroom, I did not drink much water and got headache later that day because I didn’t want to use the public toilets.

Bus ride to Malaysia from Singapore

Feb 12, 2018 Sunny, Monday

About 10 years ago, I traveled to Singapore and regretted I could not get a visa to Malaysia, which is just 30 minutes bus ride away. Today, David and I made it.

This morning, after breakfast, we took a Uber to the bus station, which only cost $7. Then we got on the big double level bus. It is like the first class on the flight. It is very spacious. You can adjust the seat as a bed, also has a massage function.

Only half hour later, we arrived the border. At the border, we first passed the Singapore immigration, then we got back to the bus, the bus stopped again and we took all our luggage to pass the customs of Malaysia. It was very easy, they scanned the bags and that’s it. They just did the fingerprint and did not ask any questions, not like other countries…

After that, a girl got on the bus taking a big bag, looked like our snacks. We were told they provide only snacks, so I bought a big mushroom Baozi at dinner time yesterday and made some salad this morning.

Just like on the flight, the girl asked customers one by one and wrote it down on a small notebook, “Do you want hot drinks or cold drinks? Chinese tea or Italian tea? Italian tea is with milk and sugar…” Woo, that is better than the flight attendant. So respectful, comfortable and considerate services. Later, each one got our “snacks”, literally, it is a lunch box with fried fish, pickles, eggs, shrimp paste and rice. After my meal and a cup of tasty Italian tea, my stomach has no space for my Baozi and veggie salad.

I saw a guy seating next to me had some newspaper and asked if I could read and he agreed right away. It was in Chinese, very famous Singapore Morning. A few things are very interesting:

1. The government subsidizes the public transportation. (No wonder the cost is so low).

2. The government took more money for public housing.( I heard the married couples have priority to get public housing and only $3000 per month. The western world is helping the single moms and the eastern world is supporting the married couples. )

3. A group of people arrange fake marriage in Singapore were caught.

4. A new immigrant woman from Beijing, she had big success in Singapore and got a lot rewards for helping low income people.

5. Marriage counseling column: couples should have private time after having kids; problematic marriage need to get professional help in order to be fixed and holding hands to the rest of life. The perspective of the counseling is based on a good marriage or a good couple should holding hands to the end of life…

6. An article titled “Socialist is popular”, talking about political policy of China and President Xi…

During the 5 hours’ ride, we saw a lot coconut trees on the side of the road. I guess the coconut dish or milk are very cheap here…a lot of trees too, very green and clean…only until the Center of KL, the traffic got very bad.

Generally speaking, it was a pleasant experience riding a bus to KL from Singapore.

Beneath the Southern Cross

Feb 2, 2018, Sydney, cloudy and raining

From Jan 9th to today, we have lived in the South Hemisphere for 23 days. Literally, we live underneath the Southern Cross nearly one month.

It is interesting that both the flag of Australia and New Zealand have the Southern Cross. You can see that the southern Cross is a very important symbol in the South Hemisphere countries. We were lucky to see the Southern Cross constellation in an evening in a camp at New Zealand. It was very bright and obvious. The four stars looks exactly like the religious cross. I think the bottom star is pointing to the south.

It is very easy to mix up these two flags. They both have the blue background and the Union Jack on the left corner, and the Southern Cross on the right. The difference are:

1. number of stars – The Australia one has 2 more stars, one is the Commonwealth star under the Union Jack, another is a small five pointed star near the Southern Cross; the New Zealand flag only has 4 stars, which is the southern cross.

2. color of stars – The stars in the NewZealand flag is 4 red stars with white edges; the stars color in the Australian flag are white.

3. shape of stars – In the Australia flag, there are all seven pointed stars except one five pointed stars near the Southern Cross; the stars in the New Zealand flag are all five pointed.

Yesterday, we went to the Opera House and watched The Merry Widow. It was very happy experience. I consider this is the gift from David for our 4th anniversary. In California, I guess it was January 31. There are few things I love about this show.

1, They arranged 2 breaks, each one is 20 minutes, which I really like( see our pictures taken during breaks).

2, Also, I love the subtitle on the top of the stage. I am always confused by the lyrics when I was watching shows in the US, because there are no subtitles. I really appreciated the beautiful lyrics. I think this is one of the beauty of Opera. For example, “ there are no single way to please women as they are all different”…

3, the air conditioning was not too cold and women with dresses are happy. Another contrast to the US opera house and theaters.

Another positive thing I had was I got a haircut in Sydney. The stylist was Japanese. He speaks with a very low voice and explained his design patiently. This is actually my first time cut my hair by a Japanese. I am pretty happy about it. They gave me 10$ coupon for a 65$ hair wash, massage, and stylish. No worry about tipping too:) I actually found nearly every women I saw on the street of Sydney has a decent hair style. I guess many Japanese stylists here. Compared to emigrate to the US, Australia has better social well-fair and less jet lag, for many Asian immigrants…

We also had a great dinner. We went to a Malaysian restaurant for Laksa. It is noodle soup actually. I had veggie one. They put lemon, mint and raw onions there. I was worried about the shrimp paste, but I am fine. From this, I think the food quality is good there. David had chicken one, it is their specialty. Very tasty soup, with coconut water, the chicken was fresh and tasty. We will definitely go back if we stay Sydney longer. I expect we can try more tasty food in Malaysia later on the trip.

During the 23 days of underneath of the Southern cross, I had a lot positive experience. I love the food in New Zealand, venison, salmon, and lamb especially. I love the gorgeous trails at Mountain  Maunganui. I fell in love of RV life style too. I enjoyed the ferry trip at Brisbane and the lovely loft apartment we lived. I love my new hair style designed by a Japanese stylist. We are heading to Melbourne direction today, do not know what will happen…
