Happiness is keeping things simple, by Yanmei

12/18/2017 Sunny Monday

In the morning, I woke up in to corn bread smell. I realized David is not in the bedroom, he must be in the kitchen baking.

After having his delicious corn bread, I decided to make something special for us as well. I walked to my herbal & veggie garden, it was so sunny and bright even in the winter. I picked two pieces of kale, two pieces of celery, a few mints, and one lemon. I cleaned them very well and put them in the blender, added honey. After a few minutes ‘noise, I got this garden fresh green juice. I poured it into two small cute wine cups, and brought it to David. He drank it at once. I gave him the second cup and asked him to sip slowly and enjoy the smell and taste. He did, it was fabulous! We are going to start out trip in two weeks; I feel I am going to miss my lovely garden and homemade food.

I want to recommend my “garden fresh green juice” as it tastes very good and has multiple healthy benefits:

Kale: full of vitamin A and K, a good detoxification herb

Mint: good for digestion system, anti-inflammatory

Celery:good for your bones

Lemon: detoxification, a lot of vitamin C

Honey: a lot of manganese, iron, and good for digestion system

Niagara, Cornell and Yale

David and I left Bruce beach on Thursday, and today is Saturday. Only 3 days passed, we have done a lot.

First day, we had a boat trip at Niagara Falls and had a great dinner in a Greek restaurant. Second day, we visited Jiajia, my Chinese friend and glass museum which is near her house, then had a campus adventure at Cornell University. The last day, we joined a campus tour at Yale University and lived in lovely B&B between Yale university and New York.

One of the reasons that I enjoy traveling is I love to learn the differences and surprises during trips. In the Greek restaurant, I took a picture of their painting on the wall. It is said by a Greek philosopher that “women know everything about everything”.

“What does it mean?” I asked the waiter, “Do you believe it?”

“I do not believe it, but if my girl-friend is here, I will agree.”

“How many Greeks believe it?”

“At least 50%”, said David as he joined our conversation, “the women.”

We all busted into laughter afterwards. Isn't it great to know this wisdom of life started from thousand of years ago in Ancient Greece?!

Both David and I enjoyed the buffet in the Cornell students' dinning hall. I was surprised there are so many choices, stir fry with To Fu and veggies, delicious fried rice, pasta, Pizza, wrappers, fruits, non-GMO milk and frozen yogurt….I told David I was very satisfied with the quality of food. His idea to go to the buffet, I love the campus atmosphere. I feel it is quieter, more activities, sports, arts quad, and the water falls are nice too.

The amazing thing of the third day is I found the Airbnb we chose is only one third price of our house in California. But the house seems bigger and yard is spacious. It is located between Yale university and New York City. I am surprised the differences. Should we move to east coast?….

Day 3

Great breakfast in B&B

After driving 8 hours, we checked in late to an B&B. It was a nice house, but we did not explore it as we were very exhausted and sleepy. I cooked some veg soup and shared some with David, then went to bed.

In the morning, our host cooked the most delicious breakfast for us. Home made whole wheat bread is my favorite. I love the scrambled eggs from their back yard chickens. Coffee is pretty good too. Lucky! A great B&B.

Mormon Temple
Organ and podium in the Tabernacle building

Mormon temple, Salt Lake City

As out host suggested, we went to the center of Mormon religion, the temple at downtown of Salt Lake City.

There are amazingly recruited beautiful girls from different countries to be volunteers providing tourists free guided tours. They are from Thailand, Taiwan, Columbia….

After the tour, we started our trip to west Yellowstone. It was raining, so not much to say.

Another 3 state day

One thing I found interesting in the Mormon buildings is the pews and other wooden parts are made of white pine, but they wanted it to look like oak, so they painted wood grain lines. They are remarkably well done, especially considering they were done by the original settlers in the 1870s.

Hand painted to look like oak

After Salt Lake City we headed North towards Idaho. Yanmei was taking a turn driving so it was my job to take a picture of the Welcome to Idaho sign, but I wasn't paying attention, so I failed.

Fail

Idaho definitely had more signs of life than most of Nevada and Utah. There were farms all along the road. By the way I forgot to mention one of the great things about Utah: 80 mph speed limit on their highways! Idaho has the same limit, so we were able to make pretty good time, although they had a lot of construction zones.

Eventually we crossed into Montana as we approached West Yellowstone. The forecast was for a thunderstorm. We didn't hear any thunder, but it rained fairly heavily for a while. Hopefully it will clear up by tomorrow when we go to Yellowstone National Park.
